The internet architecture is evolving and the current architecture does
not satisfy the requirements of certain applications for bandwidth,
performance and response time. Efforts are being made to develop new
protocols but unless we do not understand the motivations behind the
current design of the internet architecture, we cannot solve these
problem. This paper elaborates different motivations behind the design
decisions that contributed to internet design. The author has discussed
the design requirements for the protocols and has categorizes the goals
that had most profound effect on the design decisions. It has been
highlighted that as the internet protocols were designed for a different
scenario e.g. military use so they had their own goals and objectives that
would have been different if it would have been prioritized for other
scenarios e.g. commercial purposes. It also shows how the design goals
were evolving as the services required to be supported were being
understood.
This paper could help us understand the basic flaws and the limitations
inherent to the design consideration of internet protocols and once we
have that understanding only then we could improve the current internet
architecture.
