"A Web Conflict Centers On Languages Used in Address" NYT C9 Summary: ========= As the first Internet Governance Forum begins today near Athens, a conflict is emerging over the use of non-western characters and languages in Internet address. Vinton Cerf, known as a father of the Internet fared that the network's addressing system would break down by international groups interfered with plans to expand the languages used in domain names. Icann , the Internet Corporation for assigned names and numbers, has been the target of global criticism over Internet governance issues. Observation: =========== At present, 37 characters can be used for Internet addresses; Icann is gradually adopting a plan that would expand that set to tens of thousands of characters from all of the world languages. Already, several Asian character sets have been approved. It's turning out quite difficult to integrate this very large character set in a way that is safe and stable and will work with many applications for many decades to come-to future-proof it. Non-western characters will be translated to the corresponding English Internet address, then link to the website directly. 2. "A Corner of the Web for Studios to Promote Their Oscar Hopefuls." NYT C1 Summary: ========= Hollywood has been slow to shift advertising dollars to the Internet from the print media. The studios spend about 3 percent of their ad budgets online, compared with 5.7 percent for the average industry. The lag is also evident in ads aimed at influencing the outcome of the Oscar races. So maybe some of the winners at the next Academy Awards ceremony take time during their acceptance speeches to thank their Webmasters. Observation: ========== Internet advertising revenue has grown upward of 30 percent for the last three years. Traditional media companies have watched advertisers and consumers increasingly move online. Concerns about click fraud and viewer statistics do not appear to be affecting online adverting revenue right now, however the issues must be resolved before large advertisers would want to pour much more money online. NYT C1 Summary: ========= T-Mobile became the first major mobile phone carrier in the United State to begin selling service that allows a single handset to communicate over both cellular networks and Wi-Fi hot spots. The phone could link to T-Mobile's cellular network outdoors and to Wi-Fi routers at homes, in offices and in other locations like airports and hotels. This lets customers avoid using some of their cellular minutes and increases coverage in places where signals are typically weak, like basements and rooms without windows. Observation: ========== Making phone calls using voice-over-Internet protocol seems not only inexpensive, but also very modern. VoIP could let you make voice calls over the Internet to anywhere in the world. Over the last year, however, VoIP providers like the industry leaders Skype have been offering handsets that look and work more like the phones people are used to. VoIP services from the computer side of the industry, like Skype, yahoo, MSN, usually offer free calling to other members using their service. So people should choose the service already used by the people they want to call.
