General Statement About Remote Access to CSLab
Due to the importance of security, especially when it involves remote
access to CSLab machines, we have taken a number of steps to ensure that
our systems are protected from the threat of individuals trying to break in
and misuse our resources. For example, we do not permit off-campus users to
send email via our mail server, nor do we allow incoming Telnet sessions and
nor is the CSLab Samba server directly available to outside machines.
Nonetheless, we are keenly aware the many CSLab users want to use CSLab resources
when away from the department. As a result, we have made available a series of
informational pages that describe how to access CSLab remotely in a secure manner.
Although this requires a few extra-steps on the part of the individual, the security
benefits are important.
We recommend that begin by taking a quick look at the Remote User FAQ
