Free Lunch The CSC HELP CENTRE is open Monday to Thursday, 4 to 6, in BA 3234. The COMPUTER SCIENCE COMMUNITY bulletin boards are at https://csc.cdf.toronto.edu/. FREE LUNCH with me, Jim Clarke …noon on Tuesday, March 20. RSVP to: uglunch@cs.utoronto.ca. Once again, just after I sent the last newsletter, I was blindsided by a bunch more items, some urgent. Here we go... Wednesday, February 28, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. [No, Danny, there is no prize for defining a first-year pancake. All others are eligible to feel proud of themselves if they know which Danny I mean.]RAVIN BALAKRISHNAN WINS SLOAN FELLOWHSIP These things are a big deal, and it's wonderful Ravin has won one. You should take a course from him, if you can fit it in. In case you're interested, the other U of T Sloan winner was Deborah Zamble of Chemistry. I got to interview her last year as part of a survey about team teaching. Now, I know nearly nothing about chemistry (I even picked a university partly to avoid first-year chemistry), and even less about evaluating research, but somehow I'm not surprised she won this award. She just seemed right -- wanting to do her research and caring about her teaching too. Sort of like Ravin. NATIONAL BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE March 16 and 17, in Toronto. This is a student-run conference that has had attendees burbling in previous years. Also see http://www.nbtc.ca. HART HOUSE LECTURE IS CS-RELEVANT Also see http://www.harthouselecture.ca. Disclaimer (not particularly related to postings in this issue): This posting is oriented towards U.S. students, but you might be interested enough to follow up and find out more. |
