Celebrating 40 Years of "Social Issues in Computing"
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Social Issues in Computing. Published in 1973, this groundbreaking textbook by DCS professors C.C. (Kelly) Gotlieb and Allan Borodin was one of the earliest books to discuss how computer technology impacts and affects society. To commemorate this milestone, DCS is hosting a Social Issues in Computing blog, which features posts by distinguished members of the intellectual community, and interviews with the authors. Professor Stephen Cook Appointed to the Order of Ontario
Professor Stephen Cook was named to the Order of Ontario this past January. Members of Ontario’s highest honour are chosen for contributions to the arts, law, science, medicine, history, politics, philanthropy and the environment. Read more here.
DCS Faculty Members Bianca Schroeder, Vinod Vaikuntanathan, and Russ Salakhutdinov (Cross-Appointed) Receive 2013 Sloan Awards
The department is proud to call three of the U of T’s five Sloan recipients their own. The Sloan recognizes young researchers who show the “unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field.” See more on this exciting news here.
PhD Student Christian Muise Named Winner of the Google Places API Developer Challenge
Muise, one of three 2012 winners, was recognized for his app TTC Pass, “a website that allows for collaborative editing of the location for purchasing various transit fares” in Toronto. See more information on the challenge and the other winning projects here.

Research in Action Showcase 2013 – April 17 
Save the date! The Department of Computer Science annual Research in Action (RIA) showcase will be held on Wednesday April 17, 2013 at the Royal Conservatory of Music. RIA is a cross section of research from various areas in computer science. RIA welcomes the general public and industry representatives from the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.

The department is holding its annual spring open house for students interested in our undergrad program.
