DCS Research Showcase

This past March, the department hosted another "Research in Action" (RIA) research showcase for industry guests. This annual event highlights some of the exciting projects that are being developed at DCS. For information on RIA and the projects shown, click here.

Awards

This April, six DCS students were awarded grants by Google's highly competitive Summer of Code program. Summer of Code was created to fund student developers working on open source projects over the next few months. The department's students were part of a pool of 1,125 students who received this honour (beating out over 7,000 other applicants): Matthew Basset (Hackystat Sensor for Visual Studio Team Foundation Server), Henig Eran (Python Plugin for Web-CAT), Victoria Mui (GenMapp - IDEA 21: Automatic [Smart] Node and Edge Label Layout), Wong Wa (Visualizing HackyStat Data Using Flare), Qi Yang (Web-CAT Grader Plug-in for Eclipse) and Qiyu Zhu (DrProject Web Administration Interface). DCS Spring Reunion 2008 - May 29
Computer Science alumni and their guests are invited to the department for our sixth annual Spring Reunion event, featuring a lecture by Bill Reeves (MSc 1979, PhD 1980), Supervising Technical Director at Pixar Animation Studios. The lecture will take place on Thursday, May 29 at 5:00 p.m. at the Bahen Centre for Information Technology. This year's lecture is offered as part of the department's Dynamic Graphics Project 40th Anniversary celebration, DGPis40. See the Spring Reunion invitation here. Computing Insights
For over 20 years, the department has hosted Computing Insights, a summer program for high school students. This program allows students to experience computer science at a university level. Participants also have the opportunity to live on UofT's St. George campus. Space is limited for this year's program, which runs for one week, July 6-11. Click here for more information.

Speech is becoming increasingly more prevalent in human-computer communication, due to the proliferation of rich media content on the World Wide Web. We are working on creating speech summarizers that extract essential information from speech data. For this research
