On February 4, 1999, WCS organized the second annual undergraduate computer science women's party. We mingled, had an interesting panel discussion, and ate some great food. We thank the department of computer science for providing the delicious food, and Ron Baecker for letting us use his digital camera.
Patricia Black started her career in computers with a Bachelor of Mathematics co-op Computer Science degree from University of Waterloo. She has worked in the computer industry for various companies over 10 years including Rogers Video, and Kelloggs. Patti is currently working at Oracle Corporation in the Consulting Services group. She has been married for 7 years, and has one child. Patti likes skiing, squash, and walking by the water.
Julie Chan is a Prinicipal Consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers where she leads the information technology strategy practice for public sector clients. Before joining PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1992, Julie worked at the following firms: Linkage, Paradigm Consulting, KPMG Management Consultants, Geac, Northern Telecom. Julie received her Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science for Data Management from the University of Toronto. She later attended Boston University, Graduate School of Management and received a Master of Science in Management Information Systems. Julie is a Certified Management Consultant (CMC) and is currently President of the Institute of Certified Management Consultants of Ontario.
Kelly Lyons received her PhD in Computing and Information Science from Queen's University in 1994. Her PhD thesis was on graph layout algorithms. Kelly is working at the IBM Software Solutions Toronto Laboratory in DB2 Universal Database Performance while on sabbatical from the IBM Centre for Advanced Studies. She is an adjunct professor in the Computer Science Department of York University. Kelly has served as Program Co-Chair for CASCON'94, CASCON'96, and CASCON'97. She is interested in attracting young girls and women to information technology and recently co-chaired a workshop on this subject. Her research interests include database performance, distributed computing, graph layout algorithms, and computational geometry.
Corley Phillips completed a B.Sc. in 1959 in Math from the University of Iowa and an M.Sc. in 1974 in Computer Science, from the University of Toronto. Corley's first career was teaching mathematics and having children. Her 2nd career is Information Technology, as a teacher, programmer, project manager, business anaylst, system designer, marketing support, JAD facilitator, resource management and management consulting. One can do many different things in 30 years-all great fun. Currently Corley is an independent consultant working on "interesting" projects in the financial services industry.
Laura Sedgwick graduated from the University of Toronto in June 1998 after completing a Master's of Science in Computer Science. Previous to this she completed a Bachelor's of Science at Acadia University in Honours Mathematics with a second major in Computer Science. She is currently working in Toronto as a software developer for Algorithmics, a finanical company specializing in Risk Management Systems.
