View and Forward Full Header Information

When troubleshooting an email problem it is often useful for me or the other sys admins to look at the header information of emails. However, since emails can be personal and confidential we do not go through other people's email. If we do need more information than is available from the logs we will ask you to forward us the header information. Please do not forward the entire message.

Many mail clients do not display or forward the full headers by default. Bellow are instructions to get some of the popular mail clients to do this.

Thunderbird

To get Thunderbird to display full headers go to View > Headers > check All

To forward full headers select the message and go to Message > Forward As > Inline. You can then remove the body of the message while leaving all the header information intact.

Pine

To configure pine to view full headers, type M > S > C > then go down the list until you find and select [] enable-full-header-cmd its in the Advanced Command Preferences section > Type X to set > E > Y

When viewing a message type H to view full headers before forwarding it to POCs.

Apple Mail

To get Apple Mail to display full headers go to View > Message > Long Headers.

Microsoft Outlook Express

Google Mail (gmail)

To view the full headers in gmail, open the message. Near the top right of the message you will see a drop down arrow (near the reply button), click it and select Show Original. A new window will open with the full headers. You'll have to copy and past them into your email, there doesn't seem to be a way to forward them from the new window.
